Our Clean Electricity System

North America’s Climate Change Success Story

Between 2005-2018, greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity generation in Ontario dropped by over 90% — due in large part to the province-wide elimination of coal-fired electricity generation.

Today our grid is...

94%

emissions free and is one of the cleanest grids in the world.

3%

Accounts for just 3% of the province’s total GHG emissions.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the Institute for Sustainable Development, the elimination of coal-fired electricity generation in Ontario is the single largest greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction measure in the world.

The Challenge

Getting to Net-Zero

As Ontarians continue to make more climate-conscious choices and industries invest in innovation to help reduce emissions, demand for clean energy is only going to increase. We need to be ready.

Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has noted that even to meet Ontario’s energy needs today, we need to build capacity [Link to IESO Study + Include Graph]. With the retirement and refurbishment of nuclear facilities across the province, uncertainty in global energy markets, and jurisdictions we might consider importing from facing similar supply issues, a gap is emerging between supply and demand that could compromise our energy security. And that gap is only going to increase as we scale clean energy solutions to achieve our net-zero goals.

Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has noted that even to meet Ontario’s energy needs today, we need to build capacity. With the retirement of the Pickering nuclear plant in the mid-20s, ongoing refurbishment of our other nuclear facilities, uncertainty in global energy markets, and jurisdictions we might consider importing from facing similar supply challenges, a gap is emerging between supply and demand that could compromise our energy security. And that gap is only going to increase as we invest in new clean energy solutions to achieve our net-zero goals.

The SOlution: Do more with electricity

To meet the needs of Ontarians today while creating the kind of reliable clean energy capacity needed to achieve economy-wide decarbonization, we have to invest in and expand the clean energy solution we have right here at home: our world-leading, low-carbon electricity system.

Do more with electricity

Our #MadeInOntario Advantage

Access to one of the world’s cleanest electricity systems offers Ontario a natural advantage. The cleaner the system, the cleaner our choices. As we consider what a no-carbon or low-carbon future looks like, our clean electricity system will be relied on to:

Support and scale the mass adoption of electric vehicles

If we want to shore up our clean energy supply, maximize the impact of our climate-conscious choices, and achieve the scale needed to reach our climate change targets, we have to invest in the #MadeInOntario clean energy solution that can power our province towards our net-zero goals.

Take Action Today!

Access to one of the cleanest electricity systems in the world will help to support Ontario’s energy transition goals, but we need a plan to make the most of this invaluable climate change asset.

Let elected officials know that you support an “all-hands-on-deck” approach, one that will keep costs affordable and supply reliable as we look to make the most of our Made-In-Ontario clean energy advantage.
